Shawnee Middle School’s Functional Skills students recently had the opportunity to explore the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art during a field trip designed just for them. The museum graciously opened its doors on a day when it is typically closed to the public, providing a calming and comfortable environment for the students to enjoy.

Students participated in the museum’s Mosaics Mondays program, a unique experience created for neurodivergent learners. Held on Mondays when the museum is closed, Mosaics Mondays allows students to explore the galleries at their own pace, often independently and without direct supervision. Following their visit, students can engage in a variety of hands-on art activities, with the freedom to focus on the projects they find most interesting. A quiet space is also available for those who prefer a more low-key experience.

“Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art has been quietly working on the Mosaics Mondays program for some time, inspired by similar efforts at zoos and museums across the country,” said Sylwia Partyka, Director of Development at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art. “As more children are diagnosed with autism and other neurodivergent conditions, the need for inclusive, welcoming spaces has never been more clear. We began to ask ourselves an important question: Is there a need for something like this right here, in our own community? To find out, we turned to someone who knows this population best—Mrs. Allyson Cleveland, Director of Special Services for Shawnee Public Schools. Her response was immediate and enthusiastic.”

“Inclusive learning environments are essential to helping all students grow and thrive,” said Allyson Cleveland, Shawnee Public Schools Director of Special Services. “We are incredibly grateful for community partners like the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, who recognize the importance of providing meaningful, accessible experiences for every learner.”

Shawnee Public Schools is committed to exposing students to unique opportunities that expand the learning environment. Inclusive experiences like this not only celebrate the diversity of students but also strengthen important partnerships within our community.

The trip was a memorable day for Shawnee’s Functional Skills students, offering them not only exposure to world-class art but also the freedom to express themselves creatively in an environment tailored to their needs. The collaboration between Shawnee Public Schools and the Mabee-Gerrer Museum highlights the power of partnerships in creating a more inclusive and supportive community for all learners.
