Shawnee Public Schools recently hosted a Tribal Consultation in partnership with Tecumseh Public Schools and McLoud Public Schools, bringing together Indian Education programs and local tribal leaders for a meaningful day of connection and collaboration.
The morning started with a performance by student dancers, who presented a Traditional Flag Song. Justin Neely, Director of Language for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, offered the invocation, setting a thoughtful tone for the day.
Dr. Teresa Wilkerson, Superintendent of Shawnee Public Schools, welcomed guests with opening remarks that highlighted the importance of strong partnerships between schools and tribes to better serve Native American students and families.
Following the welcome, tribal leaders, representatives, and dignitaries introduced themselves, representing a wide range of local tribes and organizations. School staff from Shawnee, Tecumseh, and McLoud also introduced themselves, emphasizing the collaborative spirit of the gathering. Breleigh Upchurch, STEP Coordinator with the Tribal Education Department's National Assembly, and representatives from Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Sac and Fox Nation, Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma, Iowa Nation, and Chickasaw Nation were present at the event.
"With 30% of our student body identifying as Native American, building and maintaining strong relationships with our tribal partners is vital to the success of our schools," said the Indian Education Coordinator at Shawnee Public Schools, who organized the event. "The value of these relationships to our district is immeasurable. We are grateful for the opportunity to come together, listen, and learn from one another."
The consultation provided a forum for open discussion, allowing tribal leaders and school staff to work together on supporting Native American students and honoring tribal cultures within school programs.
Shawnee Public Schools is proud to continue building strong connections with local tribes and looks forward to future collaborations that celebrate and support Native American students and their families.
