The Shawnee Board of Education is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Jason James as the new Superintendent of Shawnee Public Schools. The Board voted unanimously this morning to approve his hire, marking a new chapter in leadership for the district.
Dr. James is a visionary and relational educational leader with more than two decades of experience dedicated to advancing academic excellence and student success across Oklahoma. He brings a track record of innovation, collaboration, and community engagement to Shawnee and is widely respected for his student-centered leadership approach.
Before joining Shawnee Public Schools, Dr. James served as Chief Operations Officer and Assistant Superintendent for Lawton Public Schools. There, he led a successful $100 million bond initiative that resulted in transformative capital projects and significant operational improvements across the district. His previous leadership roles also include serving as Superintendent of Alex Public Schools and Assistant Superintendent of Clinton Public Schools.
Dr. James holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Capella University and is known statewide for his progressive vision, deep commitment to building strong school communities, and focus on empowering educators and engaging families.
“I was drawn to Shawnee Public Schools because of its rich traditions, strong community values, and clear commitment to educational excellence,” said Dr. James. “I saw a district with dedicated educators and a community that genuinely supports its schools. I’m honored to have the opportunity to lead and serve in a place where we can work together to ensure every student thrives both academically and personally.”
Board President Clif Harden shared his gratitude for each candidate who applied, acknowledging an exceptionally strong group of candidates, each of whom brought different strengths and deep commitment to education. He is excited about the future of the district under Dr. James’ leadership.
“Dr. James brings a unique combination of experience, vision, and drive,” said Harden. “He understands what it takes to move a district forward, and he values the voices of our educators, families, and community members. We are confident he will be an outstanding leader for Shawnee.”
Dr. James will begin working with Shawnee Public Schools on April 24th and will assume his role as superintendent full-time on June 2, 2025. The district looks forward to working alongside him to further strengthen student opportunities, staff support, and community partnerships across Shawnee.
