Shawnee Public Schools (SPS) is providing young students with an exciting opportunity to explore athletics through its intramural sports program for 5th graders. This initiative allows students to build foundational skills in various sports through their physical education (PE) classes before transitioning to competitive play. While all elementary students learn the fundamentals of soccer, basketball, and, starting next year, flag football in PE, only 5th-grade students participate in organized competitions against other schools. This structure helps students discover their interests and talents while fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.

Each elementary school within SPS has its own team, competing against other school sites in district-wide intramural competitions. The program currently offers both soccer and basketball, giving students a chance to engage in structured athletic activities in a fun and competitive environment.

High school students also play a vital role in the intramural program by refereeing the games and encouraging the young players. Their involvement provides mentorship and positive reinforcement, helping to create an atmosphere of learning and sportsmanship.

Last week, the district hosted its intramural basketball tournament, where students showcased their skills and teamwork on the court. Will Rogers Elementary had a standout performance, sweeping the tournament by winning both the boys' and girls' championships.

“We’re thrilled to offer these intramural opportunities to our 5th graders,” said Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Teresa Wilkerson. “This program gives students a head start in exploring athletics, building confidence, and developing valuable skills that will benefit them as they transition into middle school sports and beyond.”

By offering intramurals at the elementary level, Shawnee Public Schools aims to create a strong foundation for student-athletes, encouraging participation in sports and fostering a lifelong love for physical activity. The district looks forward to future competitions and continued success in the program.
