Dear Shawnee Public Schools Families,

Like you, I was saddened by the incident at the Del City-Choctaw football game last Friday night. My thoughts and prayers are with those communities now and as they continue to recover and heal from this tragedy. Our district has reached out to each school district to offer our condolences and our support.

Safety is our top priority at Shawnee Public Schools. Our own football season kicks off this Friday, September 1, in the Crain Stadium on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University. I want to assure you that our administrators have already been working closely with local law enforcement officers and OBU officials to review safety processes and procedures. When you attend any of our home football events, you will notice an enhanced security presence and crowd control measures.

Feelings of anxiety and worry are normal in situations of this magnitude. Some of our own students and staff were personally affected by this tragedy, and we have made our counseling staff available to anyone who may need to speak with them. Please reach out to your school’s counselor if you have any questions or concerns.

We are always working to ensure Shawnee Public Schools is a safe and secure environment for your child and our community. Thank you for choosing Shawnee Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Dr. Aaron Espolt
Superintendent
