Shawnee Public Schools (SPS) proudly announces that four of its outstanding educators have received top honors at the Oklahoma Library Association (OLA) Awards. The prestigious recognition highlights SPS’s commitment to innovation, technology integration, and student-centered learning.
Jessica Armstrong | Technology in Education Award
The Oklahoma School Librarians (OKSL) recognized Jessica Armstrong for her outstanding contributions to technology in education. A graduate of East Central University with a master’s degree, Armstrong has three years of experience as a high school librarian.
Her collaborative unit, “Exploring the Human Heart with zSpace,” engaged 11th-grade Anatomy and Biology students in an interactive learning experience using virtual reality (VR) technology. Students explored 3D heart models, identified key anatomical structures, and conducted research on heart health. Their learning culminated in the creation of “Heart Healthy” posters using Canva, supported by three credible sources.
A nominator praised Armstrong for transforming the library into a “vibrant, safe, and welcoming space for all Shawnee High School students.” She has established STEM playgrounds featuring robots, drones, and VR technology, fostering hands-on learning. Armstrong also provides teacher training on classroom technology, including Newline boards and Padcasters, ensuring educators are equipped with cutting-edge instructional tools.
Matt Johnson | Administrator of the Year
OKSL recognized Matt Johnson, Shawnee High School principal, for his 16 years of dedicated leadership in education. Johnson emphasizes that “library services are fundamental to fostering a culture of learning and exploration.” He has played a pivotal role in expanding STEM education by equipping the school library’s Makerspace with 3D printers, robotics kits, circuit-building sets, and coding software.
A teacher’s letter of recommendation highlighted Johnson’s passion for student engagement: “He is a tireless advocate for finding inventive, fun ways for students to experience knowledge—because knowledge is an experience!” His vision has helped transform the library into a space that reflects the diversity, creativity, and curiosity of SPS students.
Lisa Battige | Polly Clarke/School Librarian of the Year
With 20 years of experience, Lisa Battige, school librarian at Sequoyah Elementary School, has been recognized for her leadership in technology integration and digital literacy. She has served as OKSL Treasurer and was a member of the 2019 Oklahoma Library Association’s GOLD Leadership Institute.
Her collaborative lesson plan, “Modeling a Food Chain & Ecosystem Research,” is a cross-curricular unit for 5th-grade science and ELA. Students use PebbleGo to research ecosystems, create digital citations with NoodleTools, and explore the impact of environmental changes. A recommender praised Battige’s “innovative approaches, collaborative spirit, and unwavering dedication” to advancing library services.
Cherity Pennington | OU SLIS Alumni of the Year
Cherity Pennington, Director of Library Media Services for SPS, was honored as the OU School of Library and Information Studies Alumni of the Year for her leadership and advocacy in school libraries. Pennington’s work continues to shape library programs that enhance student learning and access to resources.
Shawnee Public Schools celebrates these honorees for their exceptional contributions to student success, technology, and library innovation. Their achievements reflect SPS’s ongoing mission to provide dynamic learning environments that inspire curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
