At Sequoyah Elementary, the impact of a helping hand, a kind word, or a steady presence is being recognized in a special way. The Howl Heart Award, a student-led initiative, gives 5th graders the opportunity to honor any staff member in the building who has made a meaningful impact on their lives. From teachers to custodians, office staff to child nutrition employees, anyone who plays a role in a student’s journey can be celebrated.

Since the program's launch, 16 awards have been presented this year, with students not only selecting the honorees but also writing and delivering heartfelt messages in front of the entire school. This initiative strengthens leadership skills and reinforces the power of gratitude, making a lasting impression on both students and staff.

For Mrs. Debbie, a child nutrition employee, receiving the award was a moment she won’t forget. "This is the best award in this school district,” she said, touched by the recognition from the students she serves daily.

The program was introduced by Sequoyah teacher Tyler Harrison, who has witnessed its profound effect on students and staff alike.

"It’s been awesome to see the students' faces as they get to give back to the people who have helped them!" Harrison shared.

5th-grade teacher Taryn Burks echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the program’s inclusive nature. “This is an opportunity for everyone who has had a role in their educational journey to be recognized, not just teachers," she said.

The Howl Heart Award is more than just a certificate; it’s a testament to the culture of appreciation and community that defines Sequoyah Elementary. As students step forward to acknowledge those who have shaped their experiences, they are learning a valuable lesson—kindness and gratitude make a lasting impact.
