Jefferson Elementary School has officially opened an exciting new play-based learning space for its students: Henry’s General Store, named after the school’s beloved support dog, Henry. A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the occasion as students were introduced to this unique learning environment.

Henry’s General Store offers a supermarket-style experience complete with groceries, produce, and checkout stations. Designed to provide hands-on learning opportunities, the space encourages students to engage in real-world activities while developing essential academic and life skills. Through this imaginative play, students will have the chance to practice counting, making lists, understanding decimals, pricing items, exploring various supermarket roles, and learning about nutrition.

“Creating this space has been a labor of love, and we’re thrilled to give students an opportunity to learn in such a fun, engaging way,” said Jennifer Epperley, Principal of Jefferson Elementary. “We believe this play-based approach will help reinforce critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork, all while keeping students excited about learning.”

The initiative underscores Jefferson Elementary’s commitment to innovative, student-centered learning approaches. By blending academic skills with everyday activities, Henry’s General Store aims to prepare students for real-world experiences in a meaningful, interactive manner.
