Shawnee Public Schools Staff and Families:
Last week, Superintendent Dr. Aaron Espolt was notified that the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) was conducting an administrative investigation related to his certification.
OSDE has not yet provided the district with any details regarding the investigation. However, the Board of Education has no reason to believe that the investigation relates to Dr. Espolt's time at Shawnee Public Schools (SPS).
As of August 25, 2024, OSDE Rule 210:35-3-86 requires a school district to place a certified employee on administrative leave if the certified employee is under investigation by the OSDE for certification revocation. Therefore, in compliance with this rule, I have placed Superintendent Espolt on Administrative Leave with pay beginning on August 26, 2024. This period of Administrative Leave with pay will continue until the OSDE’s investigation regarding Dr. Espolt’s certificate is completed or withdrawn or until the Shawnee Public Schools Board of Education determines to end the Administrative Leave with pay.
The Board respects the rule of law, and its action in placing Dr. Espolt on Administrative Leave is in compliance with OSDE rules. We have full confidence in Assistant Superintendent Dr. Teresa Wilkerson as she steps in to lead SPS until further notice.
The Board stands ready to cooperate if needed and will continue to provide updates as appropriate. Thank you for your understanding and support of Shawnee Public Schools.
