Shawnee Public Schools’ faculty and staff gathered on Monday, August 12th for their first get-together of the new school year. Over 575 employees met at the Shawnee High School PAAC for a morning of celebration as they kicked off the 2024-25 school year.
To begin the morning, local area pastors joined the staff for an optional time of prayer and reflection. The pastors prayed over the Shawnee Public Schools teachers, students, staff, and administration as the new year began.
As staff entered the PAAC, they were welcomed by traditional Native American singing. Shawnee Public Schools’ student base is nearly one-third Native American. Staff were honored to hear Indian Education Coordinator, Graham Primeaux, Nick Wahpepah, his two children, and Marty Thurman as they welcomed the teachers back. Primeaux took a few moments to connect their presentation with the Indian Education program. He stated, “You often see me in a suit and tie, but this is who I am… I am Native American, I am Pawnee, Ponca, Otoe, Osage, Sac and Fox, and Potawatomi,” and through the Indian Education program at SPS, he hopes to see students standing in front of groups, successful in both worlds.
Will Rogers Elementary 4th Grade student, Whitlea Espolt, led the Pledge of Allegiance for the district.
Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Teresa Wilkerson recognized Rockstars (5- and 10-year recognition), Heroes (15- and 20-year recognition), and Legends (25+ years) for their commitment to Shawnee Public Schools.
After awards, Superintendent Dr. Aaron Espolt reflected on 2023-24 and the district’s steps toward authentically engaging the community, including celebrating the passage of the school bond. He shared a passionate message for staff as they move into the new school year. Every member of the SPS staff has a purpose, and that purpose is to provide hope for every student in the district.
Community partner, First United Bank served breakfast and swag to welcome the employees back to campus.
