College and Career Development - ICAP

At Shawnee Public Schools, we are focused on preparing students for their futures, and we believe those futures have endless possibilities. Through Individual Career Academic Plans (ICAP), our students are able to create their own personal vision of their future and set goals for achieving that vision. Career exploration begins with our youngest students, and our learners begin creating their ICAP in middle school.

Of course, nothing we do at Shawnee Public Schools is possible without the support of our community. We depend on our community leaders to help us set district goals and to partner with our classroom teachers to provide our students with learning opportunities.

Our secondary students now have the opportunity to earn high school course credit by completing internships with local businesses. If you are interested in internship opportunities for yourself or for your business or nonprofit, visit our internship page or contact our Career Development and Community Partnership department.

OK College Start is an easy online resource available for all Oklahomans to explore and guide their future. You can take assessments, identify occupations, establish education plans and, ultimately, connect to employers. Whether you are a student searching for career and college options or an adult looking for a new career path, OK College Start is a powerful tool to provide all the career and educational resources you will need to chart your course for the future.

What is an Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP)?

The information below is from the Oklahoma State Department of Education website. Learn more by visiting the OSDE ICAP page.

The term ICAP refers to both a process that helps students engage in academic and career development activities and a product that is created and maintained for students’ academic, career and personal advancement.

ICAP is a student-driven, ongoing process that actively engages students, enabling them to:

  • Understand their own interests, strengths, values and learning styles

  • Create a vision of their future

  • Develop individual goals

  • Prepare a personal plan for achieving their vision and goals

An ICAP is intended to be dynamic and flexible, reflecting the following:

  • Students’ coursework, learning and assessment results

  • Students’ post-secondary plans, aligned with their career, academic and personal/social goals and financial reality

  • Students’ records of college- and career-readiness activities
