The Impact of the Pottawatomie County Half-Cent Sales Tax on Shawnee Public Schools
In November 2015, Pottawatomie County citizens approved a half-cent sales tax increase. The revenue generated by this tax is collected and managed by the Pottawatomie County Commissioners, then distributed to every school in the county based on student enrollment numbers. When implemented, it was estimated to provide approximately $286 per student annually for each district in Pottawatomie County.
Each district's Board of Education determines how to allocate the funds, with the sole restriction that they cannot be used for salaries. The Pottawatomie County Half-Cent Sales Tax has been a vital resource for enhancing education and student experiences at Shawnee Public Schools. This funding has already provided significant upgrades, including improved technology, new playground equipment, a school bus, and other essential resources that directly benefit our students and staff.
The program began collecting funds in July 2016 and is set to expire at the end of June 2026. Schools across the county value this vital resource and anticipate a potential county resolution and vote by mid-2025 regarding its continuance. A continuation of the Pottawatomie County Half-Cent Sales tax will ensure dollars for our schools to provide safe and innovative opportunities in education for every child in our community. Together, we can continue building a brighter future for Shawnee students.
