Internships

A student intern receives on-the-job training at SSM Health.

I can honestly say that I feel well equipped to enter the engineering job force after college, which is something I would not have said before undergoing this internship program.

   2022-2023 Intern at Georg Fischer

Shawnee High School juniors and seniors can earn course credit while receiving on-the-job experience in career fields they want to pursue through our internship program.

SHS students have completed internships with a number of community businesses and organizations, such as Doggie Spot, Theopolis, Stuart & Clover, Impressions Dental, Willow Tree Salon, Shawnee Milling Company, SSM Health, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, and many others.

Interns overwhelmingly state they are learning far more from the experience than they imagined was possible. Not only do they have an inside look at a potential career field, they also learn important soft skills, such as communication, that are beneficial for any job.

Some of the interns are gaining financially from the experience, too. A few of the internships are paid positions, and some interns have transitioned to becoming employees of the businesses.

Ami [Quarry] joined our team as an intern from Shawnee Public Schools. She has learned so much with her experience, that her internship has turned in to a full time career while she attends Seminole State College of Oklahoma. After SSC, Ami plans to attend the University of Central Oklahoma to major in forensic science and criminal justice. Who would've thought a high school internship would lead to this?

These internships are part of the Shawnee Public Schools Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP) initiative. The ICAP program allows students to explore college and career options beginning in pre-kindergarten and culminating in a documented plan for the future at the end of high school. Shawnee students of all ages have visited college campuses, met with industry leaders, and toured businesses and organizations.

To request a student intern or to enroll in the SHS internship program, contact Michelle Wallace, career development and community partnership advisor, at mwallace@shawnee.k12.ok.us or (405) 214-7122.

Toby has been able to help many different types of animals during his internship, and he says he always wants to help out no matter how big or small the problem. Toby sometimes gets to observe surgeries. He loves helping at the vet and would tell anyone to give an internship a try.
