What is a scholarship?

A grant or payment made to support a student's education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievement.

Please check your emails weekly from the Counseling Office for scholarships, college aid workshops, and FAFSA info!

10 Words or Less Scholarship

To be eligible for the 10 Words or Less Scholarship a student must be between the ages of 14-25 who will be attending school in the Fall of 2024 and must be attending a school in the US or Canada in the Fall of 2024.

Award Amount: Amount of awards varies; Amount varies

Tips & Tricks

  1. Look for scholarships anywhere and everywhere.

    • A college’s financial aid office (offers scholarships just for that specific college).

    • Community and religious organizations, local businesses, and community foundations, which may increase your chances of obtaining scholarships because each has a smaller pool of applications.

    • Your employer or your parent’s employer(s)

    • The U.S. Department’s free scholarship search tool: CareerOneStop

  2. Search for other options other than school! Go out of your way to search for local, state, and/or national government levels.

    • Learn who can apply:

      • Anyone who is going to college or careertech school will be able to apply for scholarships.

  3. Know when to apply.

    • It is always a good time to apply for scholarships! It’s never too early to get a head start. 

  4. Be ready!

    • Start a Google Doc of templates with your responses to some of the general questions asked for scholarships.

    • Be ready for FAFSA sign-ups!

      • Create your FAFSA User ID, the application will open in the fall of 2024.

    • Ask your teachers, counselors, or faculty members to write recommendation letters for you. 

    • Sign up for your transcript to be sent off from the Counseling Office.

      • We can also send you a digital copy of your transcript.

  5. Your thoughts in your essay MATTERS.

    • However you think about selling yourself; do it in the most professional way possible. 

      • This is your first impression of the schools!

    • Give scenarios that demonstrate you as a person deserving the scholarship. 

      • Don’t be afraid to write about yourself. This scholarship is for you, so what makes you deserving?

    • Ask people to read over your responses!

      • Proofread 

      • Suggestions 

      • Spelling errors

  6. Organize your applications.

    • Deadlines: sort your applications by due date and complete them in the order they’re due. 

      • Some may require more information, such as: letters of recommendations or a longer essay.

    • Make sure your essay follows the instructions and is within word limit.

    • Try to submit your application at least a day ahead of the deadline.

    • Be sure to submit all required information.
